- │ THE CARD GAME 'UNO' a.k.a. 'ONE' │
- └──────────────────────────────────┘
-
- The program loads several graphics screens prior to displaying the title
- screen. This title screen will disolve leaving a rectangle in the center where
- you will enter your name as the 'Human Player'. You can enter your name in
- upper or lowercase letters but the program will convert it to 'ALL CAPS'
- because the other prompts that will appear on the screen will be in 'ALL
- CAPS'. The program is designed so that if the name that you enter exceeds
- sixteen characters in length, it will truncate it so that only the first
- sixteen letters show on the screen. Your opponent in this game is the
- computer. Who shall triumph, human or machine?
-
- ┌──────────────────┐
- │ VIEW HIGH SCORES │
- └──────────────────┘
-
- Once you have entered your name and pressed the [ENTER] key the question 'VIEW
- HIGH SCORES?' will appear in the rectangle. If you wish to view the current
- HIGH SCORES merely press the [Y] key. Pressing any other key will skip the
- HIGH SCORE screen. Once the HIGH SCORE screen is visible you can press the [C]
- key to clear all of the HIGH SCORES. Pressing any other key will leave the
- current HIGH SCORES unchanged and in tact.
-
- ┌────────────────────────┐
- │ TIMING MESSAGE PROMPTS │
- └────────────────────────┘
-
- Because messages appear with each card dealt, it is advantagous to set the
- length of time each message stay on the screen. Some computer processors are
- considerably faster than others so this allows the player to set the length of
- time that is best for them. Once you have played the program awhile, you can
- then reduce the length of time to the minimum and this will speed the card
- dealing process considerably.
-
- To set the timing length just depress the [NUM LOCK] and use the left/right
- arrow keys to move the arrow on the screen.Once you press an arrow key a
- message will be displayed on the screen for a set amount of time that
- coresponds to the numbers 1-10. 01 is the fastest speed and 10 is the slowest
- speed. Once you have reached the desired speed just press the [ENTER] key or
- the [SPACE BAR] to accept this choice.
-
- ┌─────────────────────────┐
- │ LET THE MATCH BEGIN.... │
- └─────────────────────────┘
-
- The screen will clear and be replaced by a black screen that will have the top
- edges of your playing cards appear at the bottom of the screen and the top
- edges of your opponent's cards (The Computer) will appear at the top of the
- screen. Each player is dealt seven cards from a deck containing 108 cards. The
- fifteenth card is delt face-up and will be the 1st card in the discard pile.
- The remainder of the deck containing 93 playing cards is placed next to the
- discard pile.
-
-
-
-
- ┌─────────────────────────────────┐
- │ THE 'UNO' DECK OF PLAYING CARDS │
- └─────────────────────────────────┘
-
- The full deck contains the following 108 cards:
-
- 19 RED cards numbered 0-9
- 19 BLUE cards numbered 0-9
- 19 GREEN cards numbered 0-9
- 19 YELLOW cards numbered 0-9
- 8 DRAW-TWO cards (2 BLUE, 2 GREEN, 2 RED & 2 YELLOW)
- 8 SKIP cards (2 BLUE, 2 GREEN, 2 RED & 2 YELLOW)
- 8 REVERSE cards (2 BLUE, 2 GREEN, 2 RED & 2 YELLOW)
- 4 DRAW-FOUR WILD cards
- 4 WILD cards
-
- ┌─────────────────────────┐
- │ WHO PLAYS THE 1ST CARD? │
- └─────────────────────────┘
-
- The player to go first is randomly selected. If the computer is to play first
- then it will use logic to select a card from its hand to place on the discard
- pile. If no valid card exists in its hand to play, it will draw a card from
- the deck. If the card drawn is not playable then the turn switches to the
- HUMAN player. However if the computer plays a DRAW-TWO card, DRAW-FOUR WILD
- card, SKIP card or a REVERSE card then you will forfeit your turn and the
- computer will continue to play.
-
- ┌───────────────────────┐
- │ HOW YOU PLAY THE GAME │
- └───────────────────────┘
-
- The object of the game is to be the first player to 'GO OUT' and in order to
- do this you must play every card in your hand so that once you play your final
- card and have none remaining in your hand, you win the game. To accomplish
- this you merely match the last card in the discard pile with a card that is
- contained in your hand. You match cards by COLOR, By NUMBER or By WORD.
-
- If for example the last card showing in the discard pile is a BLUE #7 card,
- then you can place another BLUE card on top of this card or you can place a #7
- card of any color to match. If you have no BLUE cards then you can place a
- 'WILD' card and change the color to any color you wish, usually the color you
- choose matches the color of the majority of the cards remaining in your hand.
-
- If you do not have either a BLUE card, a #7 card or a 'WILD' card but you do
- have a 'DRAW-4 WILD' card, then you can play this card and declare any color
- you wish. The 'DRAW-4 WILD' card is the most powerful card in the deck and
- cannot be used against your oppenent if you have any other card in you hand
- that can be played in its place.
-
- ┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
- │ PICKING A CARD FROM THE 'DRAW PILE' │
- └─────────────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you have none of these cards in your hand to play on the last card in the
- discard pile, then you must 'DRAW' a card from the remainder of the deck. To
- draw a card from the deck, just press the [D] key. If the card you have drawn
- from the deck cannot be played you have the option to 'PASS' or to continue to
- draw more cards from the deck. To 'PASS' you merely press the [P] key and the
- turn will then move to your opponent.
-
- You can continue to draw cards from the deck until you obtain a card that can
- be played. However, a maximum of sixteen cards can be held in your hand or in
- your opponent's hand. Once you reach sixteen cards and still cannot play, the
- 'TURN' shifts to your opponent.
-
- ┌─────────────────────────┐
- │ USING THE 'PASS' OPTION │
- └─────────────────────────┘
-
- When it is your turn to play and you have no card in your hand that is
- playable, you can press the [P] key and chose not to draw another card. This
- is sometimes advantageous when you are down to only one or two cards in your
- hand.
-
- ┌────────────────────────┐
- │ MISSING A TURN TO PLAY │
- └────────────────────────┘
-
- If you play a 'SKIP' card or a 'REVERSE' card, then your opponent's turn is
- skipped and you continue to play against the discard pile. If your opponent
- (The Computer) plays either a 'SKIP' card or a 'REVERSE' card, then you will
- lose your turn.
-
- ┌──────────────────────────────────┐
- │ HOW TO IMPEDE A PLAYERS PROGRESS │
- └──────────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you play a 'DRAW TWO' card then your opponent must draw two cards from the
- deck and add them to his hand. If his hand already contains sixteen cards,
- then none will be added to his hand. If he has fifteen cards, then only one
- card will be added to his hand. If the computer (Your Opponent) plays this
- card then you will suffer the same penalty.
-
- ┌───────────────────────────────────┐
- │ 'WILD' THING - I THINK I LOVE YA! │
- └───────────────────────────────────┘
-
- If you play a "WILD' card then four rectangles will appear on the screen with
- the four colors/patterns displayed inside. Next to each rectangle will be a
- number. Press the number to select the color/pattern of the 'WILD CARD'. The
- numbers located on the top row of the keyboard or the numbers on the key-pad
- can both be used. This same prompt will appear if you play a 'DRAW-4 WILD'
- card.
-
- If you are the first player to 'GO' then your hand contain seven cards will be
- displayed at the bottom of the screen. A arrow pointing down will appear over
- the fisrt card in your hand. You first press the [NUM LOCK] on your keypad.
- Then by depressing the #4 key you will cause the arrow to move left and
- depressing the #6 key cause the arrow to move to the right. If you continue
- past the last card, wrap around is activated.
-
- Once the arrow is over the card you wish to select, press either the [ENTER]
- key or the [SPACEBAR] to make your selection. If small children are playing
- the game it is recommended that they use the [SPACEBAR] because there is less
- chance that they will accidently press the [HOLD] key or the [PRINT] key.
- Once you select a valid card from your hand, it will be played against the
- discard pile. Your cards will be reduced by one and the turn will switch to
- your opponent unless yoy played a 'SKIP', 'REVERSE', DRAW TWO' or 'DRAW-4
- WILD' card.
-
- ┌──────────────────┐
- │ QUITING THE GAME │
- └──────────────────┘
-
- If it is your turn to play and you wish to stop playing the game and return to
- 'DOS', just press the [Q] key to end the game.
-
- When either you or your opponent have but 'ONE' card remaining in your
- hand, the word 'ONE' will appear across the width of the screen and a tune will
- play to get your attention. Once the last card is played from a hand, the
- 'WINNER' will be determined.
-
- ┌─────────────────────┐
- │ ADDING UP THE SCORE │
- └─────────────────────┘
-
- Once the LAST CARD is played then the deck will be re-shuffled. You will see
- the numbers scrolling inside the deck of cards. When all 108 cards have been
- shuffled the name of the 'VICTOR' will be displayed. The cards remaining in
- the hand of the 'LOSER' will then be displayed on the screen for all to see.
- For each 'SKIP', 'REVERSE' and 'DRAW-TWO' card the winner will earn 20 points
- each. For each 'WILD' card or 'DRAW-FOUR WILD' card the winner will earn 50
- points. All cards 0-9 earn points equal to their face value. The running total
- for each player will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
-
- ┌───────────────────────────┐
- │ LET'S DO IT ONE MORE TIME │
- └───────────────────────────┘
-
- The prompt 'PLAY ANOTHER GAME' will appear at the top of the screen. Press the
- [Y] key if you would like to play another hand or press the [N] key if you
- would like to stop and return to 'DOS'. The HIGH SCORE screen will be updated
- if necessary at this point. Pressing any key will return you to 'DOS' or begin
- the next hand.
